So… last year, the General Assembly did allow for cities and counties to pass legislation allowing for Sunday alcohol sales.  And in the November 2011 General Election, City of Atlanta voters voted to approve allowing Sunday alcohol sales in the City of Atlanta.
Therefore, today begins Sunday alcohol sales in the City of Atlanta.  It’s kind of hard to believe – it’s something many people believed would never happen in the State of Georgia.  But now that it’s here, it’s easier to see how much it doesn’t solve; so don’t give the legislature too much credit.  The Republican legislature was like last year, yeah, we’re gonna cut HOPE Scholarships and pass an immigration bill based on racial profiling, but if you want to drink on Sundays, fine.
In, the City of Sandy Springs and other places, people have been purchasing alcohol and liquor in stores for a few weeks.
By the way, Councilmembers and County Commissioners elsewhere were more proactive than our Council in the City of Atlanta.  Let it be known that everyone was too afraid to introduce legislation to put it on the ballot until it was almost too late to get it on the November ballot.
