On July 15, 2009, State House Speaker Glenn Richardson announced the Georgia House of Representatives will begin furloughs effective August 1, 2009.

“As a result of the tough economic times and declining state revenues, we have made tremendous cuts in state spending,” Richardson said in a statement released to APN. “I believe there is an obligation for us, as leaders of this state, to not only control spending, but to carry a part of the financial burden that we are asking of other state employees.”

State Representatives will be furloughed one day per month. Legislative furloughs will continue through the end of the calendar year, at which time the House of Representatives will decide whether to continue them until the end of the fiscal year.
