Police union endorses Hoffman over Winslow in District 4
The International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 623 announced Monday that it will endorse LaShawn Hoffman over Atlanta City Councilwoman Cleta Winslow (District 4), chair of the council’s public safety committee.
“The women and men of the IBPO have been woefully ignored by the current city council representative of District 4 and we look forward to new leadership in that community to address our members’ concerns,” Sgt. Scott Kreher, president of IBPO Local 623, wrote Monday.
Winslow, whose district includes the West End, voted in June against a 3 mill property tax increase, which is largely credited with ending the public safety furloughs.
Hoffman currently serves on the Atlanta Citizen Review Board, which provides citizen oversight for the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Department of Corrections. According to his campaign site, Hoffman created a “Best Practice Community Safety Plan” that “has been adopted and implemented by several Atlanta neighborhoods.”
Hoffman will appear Tuesday in front of Fire Station #7 (535 Whitehall St.) with Kreher, Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council President Charlie Flemming (his group endorsed Hoffman in August), and Jim Daws, president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 134, which also plans to endorse Hoffman.
The event is set to begin at 10 a.m.
