“Raising taxes on already hard-pressed Atlanta taxpayers must always be our last resort,” State Sen. Kasim Reed said in a statement issued to Atlanta Progressive News.

“I will review the mayor’s budget proposal in detail prior to making any judgment. I have repeatedly made it clear that ending the furloughs for police officers and fire fighters must be our number one priority.  Therefore, any budget that I support must ensure that furloughs are ended for every single police officer and firefighter in the city of Atlanta.

“Further, I strongly believe that the Council and Mayor must act immediately to address the pension funding crisis which is having a devastating impact on the city’s financial condition. Addressing this issue must be a part of the current budget discussion and we must commit to thoughtful, substantive and structural reform while preserving the benefits of current and retired employees already in the plan.”
